Top tips for writing amazing blogs

Top tips for writing amazing blogs

22 July 2020

Blogs are a great way to engage with your audience, establish credibility, and increase rankings but one that is badly written can actually do more harm than good on all fronts. These are Curlyworm Creative’s top tips for making sure every blog you write is truly amazing.

Block out time to plan content. Planning ahead will save you time and stress in the long run. Whether you’re writing for yourself or a client set aside enough time each month to plan and write content for the one following. Not only will you have blogs ready to go should some strange content emergency occur, but you will also be able to spend more time carefully crafting them.

Always keep your brand voice in mind. Consistent branding is so important for helping customers quickly recognise your handy work. You chose your style because it reflects your brand and appeals to customers so be confident with it. There will be times when you need to make an exception and that’s ok, not only should blogs be reflective of your brand but also the content. The main thing to bear in mind is if you start a blog in one style you should stick with it throughout the entirety of the piece, no chopping and changing.

Write it and walk away. Everyone knows it’s basically impossible to spot your own errors so give yourself a fighting chance and step away from the blog! The Curlyworm Creative way is to always give copy time to breathe. Ideally you would write it and then reread and edit the following day but if time is of the essence make yourself a cuppa, go and do something else for a bit, and come back to check. You would be surprised how effective it is.

Channel your inner Chanel. Coco Chanel is widely credited for saying “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off”. While she may or may not have actually uttered those words they’re pretty useful to bear in mind, especially when it comes to writing blogs. Once you’ve written it and walked away, return with fresh eyes ready to trim and trim some more. First drafts are great for getting everything you want to say out there but second drafts are where a thing of beauty emerges, so be ruthless.

Do your research. Thoroughly researching the topic you’re writing about will not only help you write about it from a more informed perspective (that part’s fairly obvious surely) but can actually help generate ideas for future blogs. Get your research on and let those little brain cogs whir away in the background.

Blogs really are a fantastic addition to any website and hopefully these top tips have given you the confidence to gallop off into the world ready to craft your own. Bear them in mind at all times and you will do wonderful things.
