It’s no secret that content marketing is one of the most effective ways to build loyalty and engagement with your audience. It takes time, patience, and consistency. But, if you’re looking for shortcuts or quick fixes, I’m afraid there are none. Which is why it’s so important to stay in your niche. It’s all about knowing who your target audience is (and what they want), staying authentic to yourself and to them, and appreciating that you will never be perfect for everyone!
Know your audience
Before you start creating content you really do need to know who exactly you are trying to market to. Do your research! Find out what content they’re consuming already and where; find out which channels they use most often (social media, paid ads etc.) and go hang out there. Whether you’re a fan or not it’s likely that most of your audience is on social media, so it makes sense to start there. Once you know where they are it’s time to start concentrating on what they care about. Figure these two things out and you’ll be golden.
Stay authentic
As much as we’d love every single person who sees our stuff to love and appreciate us and hit that follow or buy button…it’s just not possible. No matter what you do or how much time and effort you put into your content marketing – there will always be people who think it sucks (no matter what the actual content is). Which is why it’s so important to stay authentic and not try to please everyone. Because if you’re trying to appeal to everyone you’ll end up appealing to no one. The other issue with not being authentic is that you run the risk of appealing to people who don’t actually align with your business. There’s nothing worse than buying something expecting it to be one thing and it turns out to be something else, disappointment anyone?! So, make sure that doesn’t happen for your potential clients by always staying true to yourself. They’ll fall in love with you for the real you, knowing exactly what to expect from working together.
Remember you’re not for everyone
As we’ve touched on above, if you’re trying to appeal to everyone you’ll end up appealing to no one. Instead, be content with knowing you’re not for everyone and focus on finding your niche. The more specific and targeted your content the better. Often people resist niching down because they worry they’ll lose out on potential clients – but the opposite is actually true. Niching means you become an expert in that particular thing, and who doesn’t want to be known as the go-to person in their field! So stop resisting and lean into niching please.
Have patience!
Sorry to burst your bubble but there are no shortcuts when it comes to content! Consistency is key here. You can’t half-ass it. If you want to create content that successfully attracts your ideal clients, it’s not enough to post to socials three times a day, your blog daily, and send out a flurry of emails only to disappear a week later because you burned yourself out. Slow and steady wins the race, and content marketing is no different. You need to be consistent, patient, and most importantly passionate about what you’re doing. Don’t expect overnight results – content marketing can take months (or even years!) so don’t give up if the results aren’t instant. Choose a consistency that works for you and build your presence gradually. Consistency in your content strategy is key-but so too are patience and passion.
