Social Media updates and what they mean for you – June 8th

8 June 2023

It’s been a relatively quiet week – TikTok wants us to think about the holidays, Instagram is joining the chatbot revolution, LinkedIn wants companies to have more conversations, Meta is still pushing the Metaverse, and Twitter’s a dumpster fire (what’s new?). Here are all the social media updates you need to know.

TikTok
Are you thinking about the holiday season yet? If not, why not? TikTok has published its 2023 holiday marketing playbook. The holiday season is especially important if you’re an e-commerce business and this playbook has everything you need to nail your campaigns.

What does this mean for me?
The 13-page document contains numbers about how TikTok is influencing shopper behaviour, top hashtags to use, key trends, and ways to maximise your holiday promos. Get reading!

Instagram
Never one to miss out on a tech trend, Instagram is currently developing and testing generative AI features for the DMs.

What does this mean for me?
It looks like it’ll give you the chance to ask any questions including how to write more effective messages. Realistically though it’s not going to be able to give you any new ideas because it’s just regurgitating existing information.

LinkedIn
DMs are coming to company pages, which will work very similarly to personal pages.

What does this mean for me?
This update will inevitably mean more incoming messages to deal with. LinkedIn’s focused inbox process can help you manage them all, separating DMs based on priority and topic settings for page messages.

Twitter
It wouldn’t be a social media update without some kind of Twitter controversy, this week they lost two executives who were in charge of trust and safety on the platform. This was a direct result of Musk overruling of the Twitter team’s decision to restrict the promotion of a documentary about gender transition, and the emerging ‘gender ideology movement’. Which doesn’t look good for their claims that hate speech and abuse are reducing, especially since Musk actively promoted the documentary on his own profile, which is basically a feature-length hate speech. Nice.

In other bad news for Twitter, its ad revenue is down 59%. This is a direct result of advertisers not having faith in the platform.

Twitter Blue subscribers can now edit their Tweets for up to one hour after tweeting them. Yay?

What does this mean for me?
Can we all admit that Twitter needs to get in the bin now?

Editing tweets for up to an hour could help you catch typos, incorrect info, or other issues in wording but only if you’re a Twitter Blue subscriber.
